Decent enough Brew Dog with the usual selection of ales. I personally am not that keen on the chain but the five of us had a decent drink and no doubt would come back if we revisit Newcastle.

This city centre bar became part of the ever expanding Brewdog estate back in early 2012 and represents a transition from the early grim, industrial décor that characterised their first forays South of the border, to something a little more warm and appealing - a notable characteristic of some of their more recent bars. This place has a straightforward single room layout with bare floorboards throughout and large shop-style front windows under which a row of padded banquettes can be found. Other seating options include chunky benches to the rear and left hand sides and plenty of high tables through the centre of the room with high stools sporting motor racing brands on their backs - something also found in the Cardiff branch of this chain. The servery is to the right, beneath the trademark cinema-style beer board, with a brick counter running the length of the wall. A few metal girders can be seen through the room and the usual exposed piping and cable trays run around the ceiling, but these are the sort of things you see in plenty of pubs and bars nowadays and don't detract too much from the bar's overall look. I noted a few books and board games to the rear of the room and there was a decent indie soundtrack playing throughout my visit. Stairs at the rear lead up to a mezzanine space with some additional comfy seating and a load of Brewdog merchandise hung from the bannister. There were quite a few gig posters dotted around the room, but there was no suggestion that performances took place in the bar itself.
I counted nine Brewdog beers listed on the big board plus the chance to sample the insane 41% Sink the Bismarck, which you could get a 25ml shot of for £6.00. Five guest brews, all keg of course, were also available and after some deliberation I tried the Brewdog 5am Saint, which went down well but doesn't seem to be as flavoursome as it did a few years ago. The usual complex pricing system wasn't quite so obvious here, but it's safe to say that you need to expect to pay big here compared to most city centre bars. Another Brewdog trait is their excellent, knowledgeable bar staff and this was certainly the case here, as a very friendly barmaid talked me through some of the available options and gave me a few tasters, including one beer that wasn't due to be made available until the following day.
I've definitely mellowed towards the Brewdog chain and tend to seek them out when visiting a new city. Whilst their pricing makes a session here prohibitive, I still find it's worth calling in to try something a bit different and enjoy the buzz that a predominantly younger crowd tends to generate. This is a solid venue and probably my favourite of the few craft beer bars I sampled whilst in Newcastle.

A "raw industrial" style 2 floor interior. 7 brewdog beers on tap and 5 guests during my visit.
