After visiting the unkempt Highbury Vaults, I was glad to get in here. The staff in here were friendly and smiled, the place was clean and tidy and warm on our visit, sorry Quinno. There was a good selection of beers, pricey I have to agree, but the pub across the road wasn't that cheap neither. It was quiet on our late Thusday night visit, so it suited as one for the road. I liked the California Monterey Pale Ale.

A new (end of 2011) venture from Bath Ales, attempting to implant a dash of the ‘craft’ beer scene into Bristol. Situated in a converted cafe, the large glazed exterior is a good place to sit and people watch. The interior has been done out in a fairly garish manner which probably cost an arm and a leg. The bar is made of wood panels including chunks of old doors whilst the bright plastic furniture is straight out of an infant school; very Nathan Barley. The cask beer pumps have handlebar covers and cricket bat grips attached. Perhaps a better fist has been made of the wallpaper on one side (depicting many overseas brewery motifs) and the fixture behind the bar from which the key keg beers are dispensed which looks a giant beer barrel although I am told that it is actually meant to resemble New York-style water towers. Despite being in the depths of winter the heating was seemingly at a minimum and our coats were kept on during our entire stay. Beer-wise, there’s plenty of imported and UK-based keg beer along with a range of 30-odd bottles. Cask ale was available - six in total - with Dark Star and Bath Ales Festivity on my visit, crazily priced around the £4 mark; both of these beers could be found for 50p less elsewhere in the city (indeed, Festivity was over the road in the Highbury Vaults) so this is basically a rip-off, especially given the condition of them was determinedly middling. Perhaps some value can be found in the imported stuff but I do wonder how much of this is about making pots of money from the well-moneyed locals and hoorays at the Uni. Too expensive, too pretentious. I’ll leave it to those who like to be *seen* drinking.

Is this a pub or not? It meets the usual criteria that we apply on here so technically is, and it’s owned by respected local brewer Bath Ales. On the other hand, they themselves describe it not as a pub but as “Craft Ale and Pizza” which is an unusual concept, and it doesn’t feel that pubby. In fact it doesn't even feature in the pubs section of the Bath Ales website, but instead has it's own URL. Mrs B described it as an “evening coffee house” which probably sums it up fairly well. It filled up quickly early on a Saturday evening though, so they’re clearly doing something right.

There whole of the front of the premises are floor to ceiling glass windows so it’s a good spot to sit and watch the world go by, and there are reclaimed, sanded boards on the floor. Walls are part papered, part bare brick, part tiled and part painted plaster, so quite a mixture. Colour scheme is dark green and black. The bar is clad with what appears to be old doors painted in a whole mismatch of colours. The larger room to the right is full of tables and chairs along with some green bench seating on the right. The smaller bar to the left is mostly taken up with the bar counter, along with a few high plastic chairs, some upturned beer barrels, a small wooden ledge to perch at, and a table or two in the window.

As the pub’s strapline suggests, food is pretty much limited to pizza, and there were about half a dozen available at around the £9 mark. There were also a few snacks such as Bar Sausage, Bar Nuts, Bar Skin (crispy pig variety, in case you’re wondering) and Bar Dough, along with olives, cured meats and a couple of salads. There were also a few cakes on the bar, as seems to be the vogue in many pseudo-pubs these days.

Beer choice is presumably fairly static since they were all printed on the menu. The cask offering was Castle Rock’s Harvest Pale and Elsie Mo, Bristol Beer Factory’s Acer along with Spa and Barnsey from Bath Ales. There was also a good, and unusual selection of keg beers. They were all dispensed from a fixture behind the bar made to look like a giant beer barrel. These were Bath’s Dark Side, Chapel Down’s Curious Brew, Flying Dog’s Old Scratch and Raging Bitch (8.3%!), Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Brugse Zot Blonde and the 8% La Chouffe. As I said, an unusual selection, and on top of that there were another 31 listed by the bottle, which besides a strong showing from the owners and BBF was also an eclectic collection.
