The Rutland Cottage has the feel of a village pub, though it is only a 15 minute walk from the town centre, or a brief bus ride. The pub still retains separate rooms with a minimum of opening out; there is some nice wood panelling which has unfortunately been painted sage green. The bar is in the front part, with a large room behind which has the character of a dining room. It was quite busy at the time of my visit, with end-of-year lunches and the sort of self-congratulatory speeches that are likely to turn your stomach and should therefore be banned from places where food or drink is being taken. The lass behind the bar was scurrying about taking food out to these people, and I had to wait quite a long time to order my swift half - at one stage I was worried I would miss my bus back into town!

There are five hand pumps on the bar, with four local beers (see photo) and Pedigree. Although the beer I had was a little tired it was by no means unpleasant and I enjoyed a few minutes here before making a move for that bus (they are at 21, 37 and 51 minutes past each hour but check the bus stop before you come in - it's just a few yards from the pub). Despite the small niggles noted above, I quite liked it here and would return another time.

The Rutland Cottage is a nice looking pub that is now fairly close to Ilkeston hospital.
This pub used to be a Shipstones tied house and it was probably the smartist pub in Ilkeston in the 80s,once inside the pub had a couple of rooms and these had an olde worlde feel and look to them with cottage type seating.
There were two real ales on the bar and i usually had a drink of Shipstones bitter which was a very nice drink the other beer was Shipstones mild.
This was a very popular pub and i always enjoyed having a drink in here.
This pub is still open but i am not sure what real ales it now has on the bar.
