A proper village local which also attracts real ale drinkers from across the area (the 138 bus connects Belper with Langley every two hours). In an unusual feature, most of the tables have mosaic tops, and there's even a sign to the toilets in the same style! There are eight hand pumps on the bar, but these are only used for display, the beers being brought through from the stillage. The pub is the tap for Leadmill and Bottlebrook, local "sister" breweries in Denby and Kilburn respectively. The beer from Leadmill which bears this pub's name was in very good condition (NBSS 3.5).

My first pint of Leadmill Oak Pale Ale didn't touch the sides, plus one of the best ham salad cobs to be had, what a superb start to our visit here. The bar side situated on the right hand side of the entrance had already attracted a bunch of locals happily chatting away on our Saturday lunchtime visit.
A couple of walkers and a chap along with his dog, enjoyed the tranquility of the left hand side lounge, reading the papers. At the back of the pub, we found a further indoor bar serving 8 ales and 3 ciders served from stillage, plus a seated dining area on the adjacent side. A young girl had brought in a large lemon curd cake, whilst we were seated in the "Old Stables Bar" at the rear and brought us over a decent slice of the cake for us to try. Eat your heart out Paul Hollywood, as it was excellent. The front bar hosted 8 pumps, serving 5 guest and 3 Leadmill beers.

One of the sixteen regional finalists in the quest to find Camra's 2017 Pub of the Year, this is a gem of a local which also doubles as the home to the Leadmill Brewery. An early Monday evening visit found a clutch of locals in situ in the smallish bar area. This is located to the right of the quarry-tiled entrance, which slightly abuts into the semi-carpeted bar area. A carpeted seating area is to the left of the entrance with bench seats and standard tables and chairs and a stone lintel fireplace with modern burner (there's one of the latter in the bar area too). A further, all-tiled, plant-busy conservatory-type room is located via a small corridor out back named "Old Stables Bar". The bar area has a cosy decor including old photos of the pub, bottles and tankards hanging from the ceiling beams, newspaper rack (always a plus) and various bric-a-brac on the walls and periphery. A variety of ales on - Leadmill Old Oak Bitter, Leadmill Old Mottled Cock, Old Sawley Storm, Goffs Twelfth Night, Cheddar Karst, Springhead Blind Tiger and Bottle Brook Butterley Tunnel, augmented by two real ciders in Cockeyed Mad Jack and Lyme Bay Eventide. I had to go for a local brew and the Leadmill Old Oak Bitter was in superb shape and a steal for £2.60 a pint. This is well worth a visit.
