Built in the mid-19th century, this is not only a backstreet pub that you won’t find without looking, but is also now a backpackers’ hostel – as John mentions, it’s tucked away on a side street so only locals would know it’s there. Lucky them.
Rex’s description still applies: the interior displayed a very fine bar back with etched mirrors, but thereafter it’s downhill at a very rapid rate of knots. The floor is seemingly untreated pine, walls and ceiling are white, the latter featuring recessed downlighters, along with several TVs showing the footie, making for a bright and clinical environment. Furniture is municipal, with some chairs stacked against a rear wall, opposite a dartboard. Décor comprised a few framed prints along with a multitude of upcoming football fixtures applied to walls. Customers were still young, scruffy local yoofs; in all, it was like drinking in the common room in a young offenders' institute.
There’s no ale here, just fizz with Foster’s ruling the roost at £2.30 a half, served by a friendly barman.
This is about the bleakest pub I’ve ever visited and consider this: my half of Foster’s cost £2.30; 15 minutes later, my half of Fyne Yarl at the White Horse cost me £2.25. I know where I’d prefer to drink.

This “pub” could well be unique. I was surprised to spot this place down a side street, as a map point for it hadn’t appeared when I had viewed the area, so I assumed it must be a closed pub. Investigating more closely I saw a sign in one of the windows directing visitors to the door that is used as the hostel entrance, and as there were some lights on inside I felt obliged to go in. It transpired that this pub is now used as a hostel, and the bar seems to be some sort of common room. There was a TV on the left showing some rubbish, with three yoofs sitting on sofas nearest to it with their feet on the table, eating snacks and drinking out of bottles. There was a fridge in the corner of the room, which I guess is used by hostel guests for storing their snacks and the like.
But there was a bar counter along the back wall, with a barman serving drinks, so I reckoned it just about qualified as a pub. There was no real ale of course, but spotting a San Miguel font I ordered a half – but no joy, the barman informed me that it is only there for show! But they did do Kronebourg Extra Cold! The furnishing and just about everything about this place was tatty. As well as the yoofs, there were three or four other old boys drinking lager and using colourful language. I can’t really think of a good thing to say about this place, other than that it was there and it was open.
