Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Markeaton

The exterior looks like a typical suburban Ember Inn, although it feels more like a pub than a restaurant inside. The various seating / dining areas also look more modern than some of this chain's outlets. The beer selection was also rather limited, with just Doom Bar, Pedigree and the 'house' (Black Sheep) Twilighter IPA available from the two banks of four handpumps.

A fine example of a 1930s estate pub, with architectural features typical of its time and type. There has been what looks like a recent refurbishment, presumably when it was taken over by Ember Inns. Certainly it's very smart both inside and out - the pub is surrounded by what amounts to a grove of birch trees, with other trees and plants used effectively to soften the edges of the car park.

It's a food led pub and was busy with groups and families making up for their fast over Christmas. I was only here for the beer and got a nice welcome from the young woman serving. I asked for a half of Black Sheep, and got a laugh when I recounted how the last time I did that in an Ember Inn I was corrected, "you mean Ember Ale?". (See photos for other beers on at the time of my visit.) I found a place to sit and drink my beer and had a pleasant quarter of an hour, spoiled only by the horrendous quantities of vinegar the guy at the next table was putting on his chips.

I've not been to many of this chain's pubs, but certainly got a better impression from this than previous ones. On leaving I got a cheery "thank you" from behind the bar, which I appreciated as it was still quite busy.

A nice pub for couples and the family, but certainly not a drinking establishment.

The food is pretty decent, but for me it lacks atmosphrere and is a carbon copy of the new breed of pubs that are springing up with every renovation... for The Markeaton, see The Broadway, The Jonty Farmer etc etc Nice enough, but lacks character.
