I think it must be 10 years since I was here, so I really need to think about coming here a little more often instead of gallivanting about all over the country. The young man behind the bar was very welcoming, friendly, knowledgeable and interested in beer. (I was told later at the Chesterfield Arms that the managers of the two pubs are brother and sister.) There are two banks of five hand pumps, of which Everards Tiger is a regular, along with Brampton Best and Golden Bud, with the other seven changing - he was putting up some new pump clips in the "coming soon" area behind the bar in between serving and talking. I went for the Everards winter warmer - it seemed appropriate, with temperatures around freezing outside - and this was a very decent drink (NBSS 3.5 but could have been more if I'd had a pint). This was also tremendous value at £3.90/pint. Speaking of which, there is a beer of the week, which this week was Brampton 1302 4% - described as a summer pale ale - on sale at just £2.65/pint.

The Rose and Crown is a large Brampton Brewery house, just off the main Chatsworth Road. The pub has a smart contemporary look to it and despite being quite open there is sufficient partitioning to ensure that some spots feel quite cosy and secluded. The entrance takes you into a wooden floored bar area, with limited seating, but this soon opens out into a large carpeted area with a good mix of benches, leather banquettes and comfy chairs. A short stretch of wall partly obscures the bar area and a cabinet full of old brewerania has been put up here and looks very smart. There is also a fireplace in this room, but unlike almost all the other pubs I visited this day, it was not lit. Beyond is a wood panelled room with a good deal more seating including some uncomfortable looking high benches, as well as a dartboard. Music was playing quietly in the background during my stay and there was a decent amount of customers dotted through the various parts of the pub.
A large blackboard opposite the bar details all of the available ales, which on my visit were Brampton Golden Bud, Best, Impy Dark and Wasps Nest (£2.65), Dancing Duck 22, McMullen’s Cask Ale, Thornbridge Jaipur and Everards Tiger - the latter acting as a reminder that this pub is operating under their successful Project William scheme. My pint of Brampton Wasps Nest was in good shape and went down pretty well for a strong ale. Two cask ciders were racked up behind the bar, although I didn't see what they were. A menu on my table listed a decent range of food, with main meals priced around a fiver, which seems like good value, although I didn't try anything.
I thought this was a nice pub that will appeal to a lot of people and it struck me that this was a good venue for Brampton to showcase their beers. Worth a visit and an essential stop off for anyone doing the Brampton Mile.

Seeing this place in the Good Beer Guide lured me out of the comfort zone of Chesterfield town centre and off towards Brampton’s backstreets. This is a large corner boozer that became Brampton brewery’s first tied outlet a couple of years ago and has clearly been completely overhauled from what it was previously. Eight ales on the go, including offerings from Brampton, Raw, Brew Co and Everards, with a couple of real ciders also on. I tried Raw Summer Ale and the delicious Brew Co Full Nelson, both of which were in excellent shape. The sighting of Everards, plus some of their literature, indicates that this a ‘Project William’ pub, where Everards take over and do up a failing pub and then let it out to small breweries/operators in return for a small tie.

As I crossed the proverbial threshold I was struck by the attractive stained glass ‘strong of arm’ illustration, which is also visible behind the bar. The interior has a main bar as you enter, with an area at the rear which had a quiet TV showing the footy results coming in and some nicely-appointed snugs which were taken up by diners chowing down the impressively cheap pub grub. The interior décor is still bedding in a bit but is well done, with wooden flooring, some dark green leatherette banquette seating with stools. Pictures of old Brampton adorn the walls plus there’s a dartboard which is always good to see. Assorted Breweriana in a glass cabinet provided a couple of minutes of distraction and adds a needed historical ambience. There’s also a rear garden area that has some grass and a couple of tables, which looks decent but could really take off with a little extra - some flower baskets perhaps?

Brampton and Everards should be applauded for getting this place to the state it’s currently in, this place is certainly worth the walk out of town if you’re feeling up to it.
