The Newton is a large roadside pub on the long Sprotbrough road a couple of miles out from the city centre. The pub is a large brick built estate looking place with two distinct sides, a regular bar to the right and a much larger lounge/dining area to the left. Judging from the exterior it looks to me like this used to be a pretty standard no thrills estate pub estate pub but to their credit there has obviously been a lot of money spent on refurbishing it to a pretty nice standard. I only glanced at the bar as I was out for Sunday lunch at the carvery but it looked busy and there seemed to be a fair few younger drinkers inn. The dining area was very large with almost all the tables and chairs set out for diners and the pub has been extended at the back to create another room for people to eat as the Sunday carvery is very popular. We had the carvery and it was very good portions and of a nice quality for £8. Beer wise they are obviously trying to make a bit of an effort by having a few lesser seen premium products on their keg range as well as the usual suspects. To my surprise they are also giving Keg a go and on my visit had three hand pulls. The Black sheep was off so I was left with Sharps Atlantic and Timothy Taylors Golden Best (£3.10). The Best was nice and clear and tasted ok but was a bit dull on flavour and was not as sweet or rich as usual which makes me think it wasn’t conditioned to its full potential but was still a relatively enjoyable pint none the less. Overall theya re putting an effort in here and it seems to be paying off as the pub was very busy on both sides on my visit and to see real ale in an area outside of the town centre is good to see as Doncaster is not exactly known as a Heaven for the real stuff. This is a cut above most pubs in the surrounding areas and for this reason means I would come back here. Probably more average in comparison to other locations but here it means I would visit again.
