A somewhat tucked away Hall & Woodhouse pub up a narrow and windy country lane, it can’t get too much in the way of passing trade but nonetheless seems to keep quite busy and has built up a good reputation with the current landlord having apparently been in residence for eight years.

Décor wise it’s got a traditional country pub ambience with plenty of exposed stonework, black beams on the ceiling and horse brasses dotted around, but somehow it doesn’t have quite the same cosiness of some establishments, although I can’t really pin down why. Flooring is predominantly red pattered carpet with some wood strip elsewhere and there was a very large stone fire-place with a wood burning stove and plenty of copper pots and pans hanging around. Despite this though, I thought it could have been a couple of degrees warmer in there. A second room off to one side looks to be more geared up for dining and has a more elegant look with cream painted wood panelling on the walls and several colourful paintings of farm animals. Another fire-place was down at the far end.

Food wise, the menu offered a decent selection of pub grub dishes such as Thai green chicken curry, ham egg & chips, scampi & chips, pie of the day and so on. These were mostly priced at around the £9/£10 mark, and there was also a small specials board with the prices perhaps a couple of pounds more. A chicken, ham, stilton and broccoli pie was very tasty indeed whilst some faggots were also very well received and a generous portion.

Beers on tap were all from the Hall & Woodhouse stable with their Tangle Foot, Leaping Legend and First Call. Ciders meanwhile were Stowford Press, Mortimer’s Orchard and Old Rosie.

This is a Hall & Woodhouse pub – they had Tanglefoot; Lemon Cricket; and Badger Bitter on. I had the latter, which was OK and at £2.60 a pint pretty reasonable priced compared to London prices, where I normally drink. The pub consists of several interconnecting rooms, or dining/drinking areas. This is very much a destination pub as it seems to be on a road leading nowhere special (no offence to Upton Cheyney residents, I just think that most people using Brewery Hill are going to the pub!). It is very food orientated. There looked to about 40 to 50 people in there on Wednesday lunchtime, and apart from my companion, all were eating. On arrival we were greeted with the question “are you dining with us today?” I only had a sandwich, but the main meals others were eating looked very good indeed, and certainly not overpriced. So, overall, this is more a restaurant than just a drinkers' pub, but it was very clear when we arrived that it was OK if we didn't want to eat, and I would be happy to have this as my local if I lived there.
