As described by Steve below, this lounge bar and restaurant was buzzing when we arrived, but they went out of their way to find us a table in the bar area. Food portions were enormous, well cooked and good value. The TV was showing live rugby, the crowd was unusually civilised and the atmosphere was convivial. Two ales on, Ringwood Best and 49er, both in average condition. I’d be very happy to come back and eat here, enjoy a pint then move of to somewhere with better beer.

I accept that a cold late afternoon in January is not the best time to visit any small provincial town, but Hythe especially took on the mantle of Sleepyville when we chose to visit whilst having a break in the New Forest and after walking round for 20 minutes the only life we had managed to find was the seagulls squabbling over discarded chips on what passes as the Promenade in this town.
After passing a lot of establishments that failed the initial prerequisite of being open we finally spotted a sign for the Seashells Lounge bar and although the entrance is far from inviting being a set of stairs upwards reminiscent of tacky 70’s above shops curry house's it at least was open.
So it was somewhat of a surprise that we entered into a fairly smart modern decor bar restaurant. The front area as you enter is a bar area with comfortable seating and a large flat screen tele showing Sky News . And then up a step is the restaurant section with its large panoramic windows providing excellent panoramic views of Southampton Water. And then outside is a really nice veranda with wooden tables and umbrellas which I imagine is a great spot for a drink in the summer months.
As well as all the usual fizz taps the bar has two ale pumps serving Ringwood Best and Fortyniner and a very respectable pint of 49’er was had.
We also ate here and couldn’t fault the moulesmariniere and Seafood Pie we consumed whilst lazily watching all the water traffic wiz up and down the Water.
It’s no exaggeration to say the Seashells bar saved our visit to Hythe

I only went in there to see live bands.

However, on one occasion, I overheard the Manager swearing to one of the staff in front of the customers.
Sorry, but I don't care if he's the ayatollah, you don't do that sort of thing. Bang out of order.
