Not long after my New Year visit, the Alma closed and reopened after refurbishment as the Brampton Social Club, which appears to have necessitated painting the exterior dark grey. I was there recently as part of a Brampton Mile crawl with some mates - in fact it was our 11th and last - so I didn't make any notes, but can remember I was struck by the stripped back appearance, with one bare brick wall in particular looking very flimsy without any wallpaper to hold it together. It was pretty busy, but this was a Saturday afternoon, of course - in fact it was Coronation Day. Most of the customers were at the younger end of the age scale, so it's definitely not an old man's pub any more. There was nothing to indicate it operates as a club, apart from the name. Still a couple of real ales on the bar: Black Iris Endless Summer and the local Golden Bud from just up the road, which was in good nick.

This is an attractive traditional pub with several interconnected rooms, albeit with archways where doors might have been in the past. The bar is to the left in a smallish room with nicely upholstered bench seating against three walls, and a very warm solid fuel stove making the place feel welcoming even though I was the only customer at 5pm. Two hand pumps on the bar, with a Bradfield pump clip turned around and Brampton Golden Bud available. This beer was in very good condition and had a lovely bitter finish. (I subsequently had the same beer in the Brampton Brewery tap room - Brampton Bierhuis - and in the Tramway Tavern, and it was much better here than in either of those.)
