There were three ales on in here during my midweek lunchtime visit - Old Speckled Hen, Doom Bar, St Austell Tribute (£3.95 a pint). There were some bar snacks available, such as chips (£4), trio of mini sliders (£8), garlic rosemary bread and cheese - effectively a cheese toasty (£5). Main courses - e.g fish and chips were around £13.

This is a long narrow pub apparently carved off from the old Conservative club. There was a coal-effect gas fire alight in a brick fireplace on the left - it looked nice but didn't really make any inroads into heating a cold room on a cold day. It was surrounded by leather armchairs and sofas, and the remainder of the room at the front was furnished with banquettes, normal tables and small round stools. The room at the back had much the same, except chairs instead of stools. Intended as the dining area perhaps? I saw live jazz advertised for Sundays.

My pint of Tribute was in good shape, although it was served in a dimpled mug instead of a straight glass. It was not bad at £3.95 a pint, in contrast to the food which seemed a tad expensive. It's probably not good enough to warrant a re-visit.

Nice large old pub.Bit gloomy but very busy with diners.Long rectangular area with bar in the front and diners to rear.Welcoming atmosphere but shame about the beer choice.Four Greene King beers on inc Morland origonal,Speckled Hen and Abbots Reserve.
