The Ship Inn is a small L-shaped pub with beer counter on the rear wall adjacent to a dartboard to the right with an oche that runs along the right hand wall. Banquette seating is found under the front windows and seating up the left leads to a television on the left rear wall, Sky Sports is shown. The bar supports three handpumps, one of which was unused which left Sharp’s Doom Bar and Butcombe Original as the cask ale options. A standard keg range is also available alongside Amstel. Out the front are some picnic tables. This place was very busy with locals, especially for early on a Wednesday evening. I’m not entirely sure why.

Recently refurbished, this used to be a fairly traditional and cosy pub in amongst many nearby bars, but has now lost something of it’s character to my mind, and whilst perhaps not a trendy bar, it doesn’t really have much of a traditional pub feel to it either.

It’s essentially all one open room, although divided off in to different sections wrapped around a central bar counter. There are sanded wooden boards on the floor whilst the paintwork is a mixture of fawn and mustard. Large windows make the most of the outlook at the front, and there are also further windows at the rear giving views over the rooftops. A raised area to the right had something of a shabby chic feel to it, with old floorboards on the wall in various painted shades, and a similar mismatch of wooden chairs. There was also an old stone fire-place and a couple of plasma screens dotted around, although these were not too intrusive – one was tuned off, and the other showing a football match but at a low volume.

Food wise, the menu appeared to offer a decent selection of pub grub dishes such as chilli con carne, sausage & mash, ham egg & chips, fish and chips, etc., and these were mostly priced around £9 - £10. There were also a number of flat breads, burgers, ciabattas and Polish specials, and the latter were presumably quite authentic seeing as most of the clientele appeared to be Polish. Food ordering times are rigidly adhered to, with one punter being turned away from the bar at 4:58pm – two minutes before they were due to start serving!

Beers on tap were Theakston’s Old Peculiar, Hobgoblin Gold and Deuchars IPA. Pedigree New World and their own Ship Ale both appeared to have run out. Ciders meanwhile were Scrumpy Jack, Symonds Founders Reserve and Strongbow Cloudy Apple, which is a new one on me.
