Very well described by BF (who, sadly, was not present when we visited), below, this superb village pub is well worth a visit. The staff appeared about 2 generations younger than most of the clientele in the public bar, though the saloon was a little more balanced. The atmosphere was convivial and the landlady did make us very welcome, and she showed exemplary tolerance of the inane wittering of an Antipodean couple who were being loud and uninformed. Ales on this time were Wriggle Valley Golden Bear , Courage Best and Butcombe Bitter. I’d be very happy to come back for their excellent beer and good food next time I’m passing through the village and it’s definitely worth deviating from the main road to seek out..

Well appointed village pub now noted for it's food. The entrance lobby has two doors ,left to the snug which is small, has it's own bar access and an array of keg taps and just a few bar stools and seats. It's the preserve of locals. To the right is the main bar, with a flag stoned floor,a very welcome wood burner and large oblong tables giving the feel of a dining area, but not out of bounds to drinkers. The bar room itself has a minimalistic feel with little decoration apart from a good sized framed OS map of the area. The servery here has the five handpumps.Along a corridor is a charming rectangular dining room with tables set for service and an opening has been created in one wall to give a view back into the bar room.
Outside there are benches to the front, while off the car park is a secluded beer garden with a large chicken coop.I was in for lunch and was very impressed by the cooking, making the premium pricing seem fair enough.Mains start at £10 with a median price of £14,although steaks will be more.Meat and many other produce (including game) is sourced locally and there is a snack menu if you dont want a full on meal.
At the bar there is a real cider and four ale options in the shape of Doom Bar,Butcombe Haka,Yeovil Star Gazer and Wriggle Valley Copper Hoppa (well kept) on my trip and it was good to see two Locales on offer.
There are three B&B rooms and occasional live music (accoustic) and the pub is well used by the villages both for beer and food.A charming place that I will certainly return to when in the area.
