Sounding like a breed of hybrid Scottish/German cattle, the Angerstein Hotel is a late 19th century building, quite commanding but in a rather unprepossessing location on Woolwich Road, in the shadow of the A102 flyover; Royal Greenwich this isn’t.
The exterior exhibits the lettering ‘Courage’ - which you'll need to enter - and one of their sign brackets persists, its gold cockerel having flown, not that I can blame it. Roger’s review still applies; you can glimpse the interior on their website, but essentially it’s a large opened out area, pale laminate floor, shades of grey colour scheme, some columns with ornate capitals, then a few simple tables and chairs, games machine, pool table (with a child aged around 10 playing on it at 9.15pm), TV with the sound down so as not to compete with the absolutely deafening soundtrack (on approach, you hear the pub before you enter it; how can the hotel guests sleep?), disco lighting, with many young customers dancing round the pool table, as if it were some verdant, rectangular fertility symbol, the 21st century equivalent of a maypole. Drinkers to the right-hand side were an older tattooed bunch looking a bit rough; apparently this is a Millwall supporters’ pub though due to the noise, I was spared the vocabulary encountered by Roger.
There’s no cask here and due to the rumpus, I had to mouth the words ‘A HALF OF STELLA PLEASE’ to the smiley barmaid, who on return mouthed ‘THAT’S £2.60’.
Feeling uncomfortable from the outset and happy to leave, this is a very poor pub indeed and I agree with the previous reviewer that this isn’t somewhere you’d take your mother out for a quiet sherry, but I’d wholeheartedly recommend it to the mother-in-law.

Roger Button left this review about The Angerstein

Named after John Julius Angerstein, an 18th century merchant who was influential in the Greenwich area, this Pub/Hotel first opened in 1891 and contrary to the previous report, still offers accommodation. Whether anyone would want to stay here is another matter. Whilst the pub initially appears quite presentable, the customer base will inevitably be sufficient to ensure you don’t come back a second time. If you are happy to spend time in the presence of people with the ability to construct sentences with words purely starting with F or C then you will have no issues here however I wouldn’t look to take your mother out for a quiet sherry as you will probably regret it.

The interior is essentially one large, carpeted room with an off centre bar dividing it into a narrow section and a larger more open space with small stage area. There is an open fire with large mirror, a few pictures and a large picture of the pub detailing the Angerstein story. A couple of flat screen TV's were tuned to an R&B music channel which was not too intrusive given the day of day. The beer selection was quite limited with just 1 ale available; Courage Best (£3) which was actually of a fairly decent quality with 2 further pumps showing reversed clips for Dirctors and Youngs Special. The barmaid was quite welcoming and charming which made it all the more disappointing that the behaviour of the customers goes unchecked. It could be so much better with stronger management but overall I found it too much of an intimidating atmosphere to warrant a return visit.

This is a large high ceilinged ex hotel pub that has been recently redecorated making it a very comfortable place to have a few beers with friends. The large island bar was being run by a very friendly barmaid during my visit, but although there are three hand pumps unfortunately only Courage Best was available on the ale front. San Miguel was also available alongside an extensive standard draught range.

There are a couple of plasma screens which were showing VH1 classic during my visit, but I think that these are really there for the Sky Sports which is advertised. There is also a small pool table to the right of the bar and a dartboard on the stage by the front window to the left of the bar.

This pub isn't in the most aesthetically pleasing area being situated on the approach to the Blackwall Tunnel, but it is a nice pub and worth a visit if passing.
