From the outside, a typical whitewashed country inn, but inside all the original little rooms have been knocked into one, with green painted rough plaster on the walls and pillars. The floor is stone flagged, and there is wood panelling midway up the walls, and a variety of dining tables scattered fairly randomly about what is a surprisingly pleasant room. Pride of place goes to a lovely old dresser, which is still used by the staff for storing cutlery and the like.
On the bar are four ales, all brewed on site at Winster brewery: Old School and Best Bitter, plus two brewed for nearby Cartmel racecourse: Hurdler and Chaser. I had the Winster Best Bitter, which was a fairly standard brew but very enjoyable - best bitter is probably my favourite beer style, as long as the brewer can resist the temptation to use the fashionable American hops. Although there is very much of an emphasis on food, and overpriced food at that, I wouldn't mind calling in here again for a beer or two.
