Kanes has had yet another chameleon-like change; it is now attempting to have a go at being a craft beer and cider pub and to be fair it at least is a bit of fun even if things are hilariously half-arsed. The old toilets have been smashed down to make a decent modern light coloured drinking area which whilst a little austere kind of fitted-in with the craft vibes. There certainly was a variety of cans and bottles of a good number of breweries (most of which were unknown to me), listed on the Untappd-style big screen. Drinks served-up by a classic West Walian middle aged boyo with a Kenny Rogers haircut and Roger Mellie vocabulary, he clearly had next to no idea what the beers were but I suppose that’s not really the point here. Amongst the chaos we managed to get Lilleys Collider (a cola cider), Wensleydale Poacher IPA, Alter Ego Brewing’s Is It Safe? (it was), Bog Brew Spiral Galaxy and Fierce Beer Café Racer. Fairly reasonably priced overall. Worth a go – something I’ve never said about this place since my first foray 23 years ago.

Small two-floored drinking den with a teeny-weeny bar that serves lager, cocktails and spirits only – no real ale. Dart board and pool table downstairs. TV upstairs. Music often loud. Rated 4

Beer Belly left this review about Kanes
Dark windowless bar. Hardly open. Maybe open for big Football matches. Beer choice is small with silly price differences for anything decent. Charmless bar staff. A refurbishment moved the previously accessible toilets downstairs into a cellar and the removal of a smoking area around the back.
Lots of closures and unreliable opening times mean there is a void of open Pubs between The Varsity, Pier & Academy. And means this Pub is visited due to others being shut.
