Has had a refit since my previous (unsuccessful) visit and is now a lot more modern in appearance. Retains the two rooms, with the left side being more a public bar with blue and grey colourings and a pool table. The right side is a bit more of a homely snug area with undressed stone walls. Three pumps with just a pretty awful Doom Bar (NBSS 1, cardboard) on the go. Best left to the local lager boys (and judging by the din emanating from walking past it the next evening, it is).

A very local pub on the High Street, opposite the Poachers. Clientèle are on the unpolished side, mainly in there for large doses of sports, loud music and lager. Used to be an ale-free zone but apparently there is a handpull now. Last time I went in I stood at the empty bar for five minutes but no-one appeared to serve, so I left.

Located right in the centre of Portishead’s High Street, this is an attractive looking pub and should be a popular spot for the town’s residents. One of my friends though, who is such a resident, has always avoided it due to it’s slightly unsavoury reputation. Going on my recent Friday evening visit, I really couldn’t say as to whether that was justified or not, as it was remarkable quiet with only a couple of other punters in there. That was quite early though, maybe it gets busier later on.

Internally there is a small snug off to the right with the rest of the pub being largely open plan, although divided in to different sections with some partitioning. It’s actually quite elegant in places, particularly at the front with leaded windows and full height wooden panelling on the walls and I could imagine it being a very pleasant hostelry with the right atmosphere and clientele. That said, the darts board right next to those leaded windows perhaps detracted from the elegance somewhat, but that’s easily rectified. Elsewhere there were traditional country pub touches too, with plenty of black beams on the ceiling and a few horse brasses dotted around as well as few sprit branded mirrors such as Martini. Flooring was some reasonably attractive slabs, although they looked as though they’d really be more at home on your patio than on the floor of the pub.

To the left it opened out a little and this had some red quarry type tiles on the floor. This room was largely taken up with a pool table, and beyond this was a further small room that was in darkness. A couple of TV screens were on the wall, but these were not in use on my visit. The snug to the right was quite cosy with laminate flooring, exposed stone walling down one side and further wood panelling at the rear. The beams were liberally decorated with Christmas ball balls and various nic nacs were dotted around including a guitar, a couple of clocks, an oil lamp and some old kitchen scales. Only the presence of a large TV screen detracted from the ambience, although at least this too was switched off.

Unfortunately, despite three hand pumps on the bar, two appeared unused and the third had it’s Doom Bar clip reversed, so it would appear that there was no real ale offering at all. Ciders fared better though with Thatcher’s Gold, Thatcher’s Haze, Blackthorn and Natch. All in all, this pub has certainly got potential, but needs a bit of investment and vision to realise it.

Nice little local with a good atmosphere. Two rooms both with access to the bar. Larger on the left with pool table, dartboard and raised seating. Smaller on left with an oversized table and chairs. Full of character and antiques. Sadly didn't note the ale situation but it's a definite firm favourite of pubs in Portishead.
