A large and expansive pub housed in an old brick building, it looks slightly out of place being surrounded by a modern housing estate, and was at one time, I believe, a farmhouse when the area was still fields. It was quite busy on our Sunday lunchtime visit, although that seemed to be in large part due to their carvery which was certainly very popular.

With it’s leaded windows and internal wooden entrance porch, it then doesn’t have quite the cosy olde worlde charm internally that I had hoped for, but does nonetheless retain a few original features. There are a few flagstones around the edge of the bar, but it is predominantly laid to carpet, for example. An open roof space with visible rafters and so on contained a selection of farming implements as well as a milk churn and numerous plates and vases. Paintwork is a mixture of deep salmon and cream. Beyond this to the left, the pub carries on down a small and slightly claustrophobic room that then leads out to a much more welcoming old barn, with a high roof, exposed stone walling, timberwork and horse brasses as well as a wood burning stove. This was the best part of the pub I thought, with a few old sofa’s to relax in, it was certainly a pleasant spot.

Beers on tap were GWB Maiden Voyage, Butcombe and Doom Bar, whilst a fourth pump appeared unused. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Gold and Blackthorn.
