A large roadside pub currently owned by GK, well-described by Blackthorn, below. Only two ales on,GK IPA and Abbott, in fair condition. The décor has deteriorated, though it did feel comfortable with the open fire. The jukebox spoiled the atmosphere as it was overloud and spewing out the most appalling noise. Food was uninspiring. Not sure I’d stop here again for an evening, but it’s probably OK for quick one at lunch time or to take advantage of the brunches that are on offer if you're passing in the morning.

A large roadside pub just off the A39, it is clearly aimed at the hungry traveller rather than the discerning drinker, although there were nonetheless a few locals propping up the bar on a recent early evening visit.

The bar area is a relatively small L-shaped room to the left, with a fire-place at one end although this was not in use. Beyond this was a fairly non-descript room with a pool table and darts board, although one punter on asking at the bar for darts was told that there were none available! The bulk of the pub is made up of a restaurant area that included a carvery counter at the rear and leaded windows overlooking the car park at the front. This had a very dark green, almost black, painted ceiling as well as some black timberwork. Paper was peeling in places and overall it felt rather tired. A number of old plates were affixed to the beams as well as some artwork on the walls and there was a central free-standing brick chimney and fire-place. A wooden frame in one corner had been used to create a sort of snug area with a couple of old leather sofa’s, and the roof of this was made up of old beer barrels.

The menu offered an extensive selection of pub grub dishes including burgers, grills, beef & ale pie, lamb shank, chicken Tikka Masala, bangers & mash, lasagne, etc., and these were mostly priced in the £8 - £10 range. On the whole the food was fairly average, and although a generous portion, my burger was somewhat on the dry side and had a distinctly fennel flavour which was not advertised on the menu.

Beers on tap were Abbott Ale, both regular IOPA and IPA Gold from Greene King and something that was branded as Farmborough Fault although I’m sure was just a generic GK brew. The solitary cider was Thatcher’s Gold.
