Will Larter left this review about The Phoenix (McCarthy's)

A very small back street local, occupying less than half of the building that is the only one left undemolished in a former terrace on the edge of a 1960s housing estate in New Town. (The remainder of the building seems to be accommodation - the entrance to the pub is the left hand one of three doors.) A huddle of drinkers near the bar gave me a friendly greeting as I entered, and the landlady was welcoming too. I was the only one drinking Guinness - the wall is covered with adverts for Ireland's famous stout, and also various brands of whiskey. The only other thing Irish about the pub (apart from the word McCarthy's on the end wall and the inn sign) is the seeming liking for songs like Spanish Eyes and Rose in Spanish Harlem played at top volume on the juke box. There's a pool table in the extension at the back, and a few small tables on a small platform near the front window where I sat, which I suspect doubles as a stage for live music at weekends. I don't know how the group around the bar managed to engage in conversation, competing as they were with Engelbert Humperdinck and Tom Jones; that, and the absence of any real ale, would be enough to keep a further visit off my agenda.

Landlady is a bit sullen, and a jingoistic attitude prevails with the Irish community who frequent this pub.No heating and needs cleaning.Avoid at all costs.
