Thoroughly refurbished and re-opened March 2020. The two bars are now one but the side corridor remains. The feel is 'traditional pub' and it's been very popular with local residents - the busiest for years. Usually three ales available. The rear garden has been tidied-up and is a plesant sun-trap on summer evenings.

August 2016
A new couple have been in situ for a year now (who genuinely wanted the pub - asked Admiral to inform them when it was next free) and the place is clearly reviving - two ales on. Both ales are rotating guests and the quality has been excellent, with choices picked by a regular who knows his beers and the people most likely to drink them. Customers are coming back and the place looks to have a bright future.

Sept 2014
Another new licensee. Popped in the other day to find the inside has a had a lick of paint (royal blue) and three ales on - West Berks Chubbs, Andwell Resolute and a good drop of Abingdon Loose Cannon. Hopefully back on the up...

May 2013
Trish has gone. New licensee in situ. Doesn't really seem to be performing at present. Two ales on the other day, a rugby themed one and Butcombe Rare Breed (that tasted dramatically similar to GK to me). Only two other customers despite the nearby Rose & Thistle being heaving.

Jan 2012
A relatively unspoilt backstreet local that has really moved upwards since the current licensee (Trish) took over full-time. Usually two-three ales on the go (Local ales such as Two Bridges/West Berks/Vale are staples these days) that are nearly always in top condition. The tiled frontage, with a bit of brewers tudor thrown in, looks nice and the inside is two bars that off from a side corridor. Recent additions include food in the redecorated back room and a revamp of the garden. A good place to take in the football with a pint. Dog-friendly in the front bar. A little Reading gem - a phrase you can't use that often. Do this one.

Excellent little locals' pub in the backstreets with a pleasant front bar and a larger games room at the back. For outdoor drinkers there are a couple of pavement tables at the front and a garden behind. Chose the TT Boltmaker from the couple of ales on offer and not disappointed. Splendid pub, but beware doesn't open weekday lunchtimes.

Very definition of a back street pub. Homely, but as a stranger, you do feel a bit weird bursting into a room where everyone knows everyone. Except you.

In the 2018 Good Beer Guide. Just the one real ale on - a perfect Timothy Taylor Boltmaker.
