A massive refurbishment, gone is the grubby desperado pub of yore and in its place is a fairly dull pseudo craft beer style interior lacking a bit of character - but a definite improvement on previous. The blue paint job outside looks good. Pool table retained and plenty of screens for the sport. Four pumps with three on; GK London Glory, Inn House Best (AKA Hardy and Hanson) and St Austell Tribute, the latter of which was in decent shape. Like the Three Tuns up the road, this one desperately needs to secure some student trade. In this location, surely achievable and there is a 10% discount for students across all food and drinks.

The exterior has had an overhaul but the inside remains the same. CAMRA discount offered on the ale, which seems like an odd decision given that there's often only one on out of Doom Bar and Courage Best. Still, it's something. Quiz machine still tight. Certain punters still challenging.

Beer has changed to Greene King IPA. It's cheap and usually in fair shape. Outside of term-time the clientèle get a bit rough (was regaled by the tales of a recently-released con at the bar the other day). Place is getting scruffier.

Student/locals pub, full of TV's, loud music, garish colour schemes and a general air of grubbiness. One ale (surprising) an OK pint of Courage Best and fairly cheap. Don't touch the quizzer, it asks for ridiculous levels of attainment, too many smart-alecs must drink in here. OK garden out the back. Look out for the comedy spellings and bad grammar on the signs, the one by the bar about drug use is particularly funny. OK I guess - not my type of place, but probably would have frequented it a bit when I was a student and it clearly caters to its target market quite well - it was pretty busy at 5:30pm on a wet weekday evening. The Roebuck up the road is a better bet for a drinker, but this place isn't too bad for what it is.
