A pleasant pub in a small hamlet, it’s a very out of the way spot down narrow country lanes, and is not somewhere you’re likely to stumble across by accident. At the front is a good sized beer garden with a few picnic benches which is a very tranquil spot to sit and sup your pint.

Inside it’s quite dark which may either be considered gloomy or atmospheric depending on your point of view. Personally I quite like it, but I know it’s not for everyone. Besides the daylight, the lighting was predominantly from a few old “miner’s lamps” attached to wooden posts. It has quite a cosy ambience with a carpeted floor and a low beamed ceiling with a selection of jugs hanging up. A shelf to one side housed a collection of old whisky bottles whilst a brick fire-place was an attractive feature with a wood burning stove, a number of copper pots and pans, a string of fairly lights and a pile of logs.

A separate room off to one side looked as though it may be more geared up for dining, and this had a couple of red feature walls and a door to the garden. The rest of the pub was an L-shape room around the two-sided bar counter. Leaded windows overlooked the garden and featured a number of accolade stickers from good hotel and food guides.

Food wise, we were there of a lunch time and had a couple of things from the “pub grub” menu. A Stilton & Broccoli soup was very good and tasty, as was a Blue Cheese quiche with sweet potato fries. Definitely good food, and I would return again if in the area. Price wise, things are probably a little above average with the quiche being a tenner and I noticed that many of the other option such as Ceaser Salad or Steak and Ale Pie were almost £13. I believe the evening menu is considerably more “gastro”.

Beers on tap were Devon Amber from Quercus and Stumble Bee from the South Hams Brewery as well as their own NoBody ale. Ciders were Thatcher’s Gold and Copper Press. The main focus though seems to be whisky and wine with at least 50 whisky bottles were racked up behind the bar, although according to their website they offer around 240 as well as a similar number of wines. All in all I really liked this pub and thought it well worth the detour to seek out.
