From the outside, the Star Inn looks like it could be a really decent pub. It's a Grade II listed building on a pleasant side street in the Old Town of Eastbourne. However, the interior is very basic with 2 fairly characterless rooms.
With nobody sat in the room to the left, I chose to sit with 3 or 4 locals in the right-hand room where the pool table is the centre of attention. Music was playing a bit too loud for my liking. Seemingly the pool table and the music attract a few of the local inebriates.
Real ale is not really a strongpoint either. The former Star Brewery which occupied the premises is no more. Instead, 2 handpulls were clipped with Young's Special on one and a handwritten Wychwood Hobglobin Gold on the other I asked for the Young's only to be told that the Hobgoblin was the only one actually available. Although the gaffer did seem to be pulling through the Young's whilst I was there. I wouldn't rush back to this one.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Star Inn
Superficially interesting, but this old pub has unfortunately lost much of its character. There are still two bars, with the main entrance leading to the smaller but busier one (with a pool table). The second room has a low stage in the corner for the regular live music, and both are plainly furnished and decorated. Three handpumps on each counter, but the only real available was Young's Special (£3.70).

In the back streets at the rear of Waitrose is the Star Inn that has a couple of tables and some seating out the front. I imagine that in 1787 when the pub was built there was a much better view than the large supermarket car park.
The interior is made up by two bars and there is well worn wooden flooring throughout. The left hand bar is full of furniture of various shapes and sizes and there is a two seat sofa by the front window which has potted plants on its ledge. There is a dartboard case on the wall, but I’m not sure if there is a dartboard in it as it would be a lot of effort to move the tables and chairs off the oche. There is also a piano and a small stage is found the left rear corner where regular live music is hosted. The preferred genre seems to be folk/blues from around the world and the next two bands lined up to play were the Cajun Dawgs and Memphis Flyers. Unsurprisingly there was no live music during my recent Thursday afternoon visit so Nina Simone’s greatest hits were being played. Alongside the posters on the walls advertising upcoming live music nights there are sepia photos of the area and people.
The right hand bar is where six or seven regulars had congregated to discuss all things local. In this bar there is another piano, a pool table and bar billiards. Tucked around a corner out of main view is a plasma screen that is backed by a large Gibraltar flag. I’m not sure what connection this pub has with Gibraltar or the deceased motorcyclist Joey Dunlop whose pictures are on one of the walls.
The bar is stocked with standard draught and the banks of three hand pumps in each bar were drawing Harvey’s Best, Young’s Special and a guest which was 1648 Brewery’s Saint George. I didn’t see any food menus so I think that the dry sales stretch to nuts and crisps.
I’ve been in here a few times since my first ever visit in August 2008 and I have always received a warm welcome from whoever was on duty. This pub is certainly worth putting on the visit list if in the Old Town area.
