ORIGINAL REVIEW Feb 2010.
Coaching Inn not far from the Peak Forest Canal, there was a friendly welcome in the front lounge with a very well kept guest ale from Cottage Brewery called Sporting Whippet which slipped down.Other real ales available include Sharp's Doom Bar and Deuchars IPA ..There is a more basic back bar and a small restaurant area.Best pub in the area and deserves the GBG entry.

UPDATE
There has been a classy refurb to the interior but the same friendly couple are still very much incharge. This old building has low ceilings throughout,a lounge feel around the entrance with bench seating and a tartan carpet. To the left of the bar, there is a raised dining area, but the landlady said it was fine to just drink in there.Around the far side of the island bar is The Vault with a couple of banquettes and a charming windowless alcove with room for more traditional tables and this side of the interior seems more suited to drinkers ,yet the counter only features keg beers and lager. The lounge side has five handpumps dispensing 6X,Thwaites Lancaster Bomber and Wainwright,John Smith's Cask and Black Sheep Bitter on my trip.My Wainwright was in very good order (pub deserves it's 2013 GBG entry) and this made the most of what can be an unexciting beer ,which also summed up my feeling about the range;a safe selection but nothing outstanding. All my three pints were served in branded glasses, each different and none from Thwaites but that's a small niggle.
There is an upstairs function room which may be available to diners and food was a big draw until the weekly Wednesday quiz started at 9pm.The pub manages to retain the atmosphere of a local despite serving food and there is an enlightened policy of employing attractive young barmaids in fetching black attire to serve the ale and rush around with the food.
Romiley is an upmarket suburb of Manchester and the Duke of York serves the area very well.I will be back.
