Visit for Sunday lunch, at last eating here

Same layout remains, has friendly feel to the pub, for instance has shelves of books take one bring one style, plus small kiddy play area in back side room, plus 4, bit of lego etc

Seems very popular, which is good, bums on seats means it stays open

Same Fuller's ex Gales hand pulls, HSB and the like, I had HSB followed by pint of Thatcher's cider

Companion had coffee, no complaints on either side

Food menu is quite varied, I opted for small ham egg chips & beans [not very adventurous was it ]
Companion had prawn baguette, chips, coleslaw & side salad

Both meals were excellent, served by polite and attentive staff, plus the landlady

Total bill around £26, which depending where you live, is not too bad

I will certainly return, just a bummer with transport

Lunchtime visit, New Years Eve

Since my last visit the pub has closed, been repainted, tidied up & reopened with new landlady

There are no big changes to pub layout interior or exterior, as you enter via front into a vestiblue, to the right, via door, is dining and large public bar style area, carpeted, with "country pub" style wooden chairs & tables

To left, again via a door, is more comfy lounge, armchairs type of place, where you could sit & quitely chat over a pint

Being Fuller's [ex Gales] it has standard Fuller handpull brews for this area, London Pride, HSB & Seafarers. I opted for the Pride, which was a well kept pint, but at £3.20 the pub keeps it's place amongst the dearest pints in the area

Food daily, from noon. The menu is varied, has specials as well. I never tried the food so once more cannot comment on quality, quantity or value, but seems to have some locally sourced items on it. Prices vary from "cheesey chips" at £2 upwards, via sandwiches / baguettes up to £14 area for rump steak, most main courses, fish & chips for instance, are in just under £9 mark, but a smaller, £4.95 option is available for those with smaller appetites / children

The decor is an improvement over previous, walls are now lighter colour and whole place seems brighter & more welcoming

The transport problem remains, so walk, cycle, drive or taxi, I guess given area and a livery stables adjacent you could even turn up with your friendly nag [horse that is, not wife / GF]

Worth going in if in area, and maybe even detouring from A3 at Horndean junction, I would have no hesitation using it for my local, except it is not as local for me as I would like

Return visit at lunchtime, just to check up

No big changes, much as before, but now has HSB, at £3.15 a pint, gulp, must be the dearest pint around here

However it is redeemed by being friendly and welcoming to visitors, well to me anyway

Lovely views from the rear patio, and a couple of horses as well, so should you fancy some horse muck for your rhubarb you can buy some along with your pint

The food menu now has some novelties, wild boar stew [shot over Chichester way I am told], local shot {Catherington Lith] rabbit pie, and once landlord gets go ahead from Horndean Parish Council, local shot squirrels

Down side is no local buses go anywhere near, so either car or walk

Worth a trip if you are seeking wild boar stew or rabbit pie etc, otherwise it is another pleasant but standard country pub, of which there are many in the area

I will go back at sometime, the rabbit pie sounds tasty
