A traditional looking pub stone built in the centre of this pleasant village, and the only one left now that the Butcher’s Arms has been converted in to an Indian restaurant, it consists of a single room bar along with a garden to one side.

Décor wise it’s quite traditional too, although certainly not as cosy as some country inns. There are a few thin beams on the ceiling that look to be more decorative than structural whilst the flooring is predominantly red patterned carpet with some dark laminate flooring off to the left and attractive mottled tiles elsewhere. Paintwork is a pale shade of blue and the was an old dresser was just inside the door as well as a few other bits and pieces on the window sills such as an old HMV gramophone and black and white photographs of the village in days gone by. To the right was an old stone fire-place and at the opposite end was a partitioned off area with a darts board and a plasma screen on the wall, although this was not in use on our visit.

Food wise, the menu was perhaps a step or two up from your usual pub grub, with most of the main courses costing around £13. There were however a few of the usual pub staples available, such as burger, lasagne, ploughman’s, etc., so on the face of it these prices seemed a little steep. There were also a few more adventurous options available. My fillet of white fish in a beer batter with thick cut chips and garden peas was actually a pretty decent dish and the accompanying tartar sauce was served in a miniature Kilner jar. The chips were perhaps slightly overdone, but I’ve no real complaints. Was it really worth £13 though? I’m not entirely sure. On the other side of the table, slow roasted pork belly with cider brandy apple sauce, black Pudding croquette and sage scented gravy was also well received.

Beers on tap were Doom Bar, London Pride and Gem, whilst a fourth pump appeared unused. Ciders were Gold and Dry from Thatchers.

The Red Lion now has a new menu...From freshly made Pizza Baguettes and Garlic Bread to Freshly made southern fried chicken to your traditional 'pub grub' such as Ham egg and chips etc...We have also listened to what the customers wanted...The customers weren't happy with the Natch on tap so we listened and changed to something more enjoyable...Thatchers Gold, the customers wanted a new guest ale so we now have three real ales...Courage Best, DoomBar, Tribute and the Guest Ale which is currently Henry's IPA. The opening hours are also slightly different...12-2:30 & 6-12 Tuesday-Thursday, 12-2:30 & 4:30-12 Friday and Saturday/Sunday open from 12. We have now also changed the hours for food on a Sunday...12-4.
A warm country village pub with a welcoming atmosphere to everyone - see you soon!
