2 of us visited this sparse pub as there was practically nowhere else we could see for a pint having walked up from the ‘spoons. No cask ales so it was John Smiths smooth on keg for me as that was the only option other than drinking lager, cider or sprits!

Not overly friendly clientele but the 2 of us just took our beers and minded our own business. Music played from a music channel displayed on a projector screen.

The pub looked like it was on it’s back side but was fairly busy and seemed to have a loyal clientele. Will never re-visit this one.

Roger Button left this review about The Barrow Arms

The Barrow Arms dates from 1862 and is one of the 42 pubs that opened in town within a 4 year period that saw Barrow turn from a small village to a large industrial town within 2 decades. I always look on a pub carrying the town’s name as some kind of flagship and the Barrow Arms traditional but eyecatching exterior certainly raises the hopes that it could be a pretty decent place but ultimately it is quite disappointing.

The L-shaped interior throws up very little worth noting albeit it is neat and tidy enough. A raised section at one end is reached by a ramp with a sofa area in front The presence of a few speakers and disco style lights suggests that it does get a bit noisy but on the peak time Saturday evening of my visit of my visit all I found were half a dozen punters gathered in front of the TV discussing X-Factor which probably tells you as much as you need to know.

Beer wise there were no ales, just standard kegs etc but reasonably priced - I opted for a draught Magners at £3.20.

I understand that it has had a bit of a reputation in the past for troublesome behaviour but it certainly didn’t come across as anything particularly unfriendly. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with the place that couldn’t be improved with the minimum of effort and it could actually be pretty decent pub with a couple of ales and something to make it more appealing to anyone beyond the select regulars. As things are though there isn’t really much to make it stand out and in Barrow it really doesn’t take that much.
