Updated Review:

The New Inn was another island pub that I have not been able to visit previously. However, I found it open yesterday. They advertise as being open from 11:30, but were a little late opening yesterday. It was more like 11:50 by the time we were in.

The pub is sat in a small village opposite an 11th century church. It is easy to drive past if you are coming from Newport, as it is immediately after a narrow bridge where traffic is controlled by lights. There is a small car park on the lane which runs alongside the pub.

Once inside, there are several small rooms with plenty of character. We sat in the main bar area, but off to the left there are a couple of rooms, the largest of the two facing the street and looking very cosy. There are 3 or 4 rooms off to the right too, including a games room.

Ales are now from Greene King. Abbot & Coronation Ale were on. Indeed, the pub was hosting a Coronation event from 4pm, which appeared to be the reason for their late opening, as preparations were in full swing. The event appeared to be some kind of pre-paid party. So, we were glad that we'd arrived at the pub early.

Food appears to be popular here, but drinks were very overpriced. Our round came to £9.50 for a half a pint of cider and two soft drinks. I did query if the price was correct, but was assured that it was.

The out-of-the way location of this pub probably explains the number of people who have tried (many unsuccessfully) to make this pub a going concern. We were glad to have finally found it open on this visit, as it certainly is a nice place. But with such high pricing, I can only see it attracting enough visitors during the busier summer months on the island.

Initial Review 13/8/20:

The New Inn appears to be primarily a dining pub. It was closed on our visit yesterday. In fact, it was the only pub we found on the island that has not managed to re-open after lockdown.

A rather nice little old pub, full of ins and outs in different rooms. The bar room features what looks like an original stone floor and a splendid large fireplace with a couple of easy chairs, leading off to various other areas all feeling quite olde worlde but in a good pubby way. Despite maintaining a good food trade, this is not over intrusive and it remains a good place for a pint, not least of the Yates Sea Dog and Sharp's Sea Fury which we found on handpump. One caution - the pub appeared to be up for sale at time of visit so things may change.
