Tucked away in a backstreet off the main road to/from Freshwater Bay, the Prince of Wales doesn’t immediately cross the path of most people doing the normal Island tourist trails but is well worth seeking out.

The pub has been run by the same couple for over 30 years has a very old fashioned approach in both décor and service that will appeal to those of a certain vintage who remember the days when pubs were run properly by people who cared about all aspects of their pub rather than fly by night managers who look no further than beyond the day’s takings. The greeting we received was so enthusiastic anyone would think we had been coming here for years rather than being our first visit and I almost felt guilty about only staying for a single pint.

Internally the pub is divided into a public bar containing a pool table, dart board and TV and a quaintly dated but very homely saloon bar. Even the pricelist in the saloon is old fashioned plastic clip on a board letters that I remember so well from my embryonic drinking days. At the front between the 2 bars is a small lobby that may have once doubled up as a bottle and jug and to the rear, a large but simple and well maintained beer garden.

There were 5 ales available – Sharps Doom Bar, Wadworths Henry’s IPA, Wychwood Paddy’s Tout, Andwell King John and Ballards Midhurst Mild and, as the pub has featured in the Good Beer Guide for the best part of 30 years, you can pretty much rely on the quality.

We did a lot of pubs during the few days we spent on the island but for me, the Prince of Wales was the favourite due to its beers and its unspoilt charm. I would like to have stayed longer but I would hope that I will return again some day and make it a longer session.

A detached corner pub in green render, with an integral outdoor and with a beer garden. It is in the GBG 2010

The interior had two rooms, but i only saw the main bar room– in wallpaper and wood panel, with the bar by the entrance. At the bar there is Sky TV and at the far end the pool table and dart board area. The service is friendly and the landlord knows his beer, the clientele a few friendly local chaps. There was no music.

Beer; tap stuff, with Abbots, Wadsworth 6X and IPA, as well as decent Doombar and Yate’s Undercliff. The Greene King MILD on last year and mentioned in the GBG wasn’t on, but will be later in the year.

A friendly place this year, as last. A local’s pub that is welcoming. I so hope I am back next year. Quality.
