Close to the university but a long way from a student hangout,it's a friendly local with neat furnishings and two large windows which give the interior lots of natural light. It's L shaped with settles along the longest wall and a very fine bust of Field Marshall Gomm, one of Wellington's men, to one side. There are a couple of small fireplaces and a neat wooden floor, and the muzak was well chosen tracks being played at a sensible volume, enhancing the visit.
Ales available on my trip were Doom Bar,St Austell Tribute,Wadsworth Farmers Glory with one handpump unused, the other one dispensing a real Thatchers cider.Ale quality was high but the choice was mainstream and unlikely to attract those seeking out cutting edge brews. But if you are looking for a genuine local, this pub ticks the box.

A small, single room pub tucked away just off of Queens Road, it’s location ensures that it doesn’t attract the hordes of revellers that many nearby establishments do, but nonetheless it can still get quite busy due to it’s small size.

The bar is an L-shape room with old wooden boards on the floor, wooden pews along the side wall and a few high tables and chairs in the window at the front. Wood panelling on the lower part of the walls is painted in a khaki green shade along with all the other woodwork. Elsewhere the colour scheme is predominantly cream with some contrasting maroon at the back. The walls are covered in pictures of one sort or another and there are a couple of old tiled fire-places. On a recent pre-Christmas visit the pub was fully decked out for the festive season with piles of presents in the doorway, illuminated reindeer and such like on the roof terrace and even a row of Father Christmas’s on the mantel piece.

Beers on tap were Tribute, Doom Bar and a couple of festive offerings – Christmas Steps from Butcombe and Brewer’s Blizzard from the Box Steam Brewery. Ciders were well represented with Stowford Press, Thatcher’s Dry and Cheddar Valley. All in all, a great little pub.

Named after me, so must be good. And it wasn't too bad when I got taken there as a comedy surprise over Christmas.

A couple of ales were on in decent nick (I forget exactly what) and we checked out the 80's retro Pepsi pump at the bar. The atmosphere inside was good - the place is rather small so it can feel busy with only a few punters in.

Worth checking out if in Clifton to visit your token Bristol Uni student friend.
