R.I.P the Chestnut Tree. The Fat Cat is the newest incarnation of the former Chestnut Tree. This is a classic example of a pub trying its hardest to cater for all sections of society and failing miserably at all of them. Now I, like allot of people would not mind paying a slight premium in exchange for quality but sadly the high prices (for Sherwood) are not reflected in the quality of their products. The pub serves four hand pulls that are actually fairly reasonably priced compared with their other drinks with Doombar (£3.30) and Harvest pale (£3.05) being regulars and a line of semi regularly changing guest beers usually priced around £3.30 that have featured old speckled hen Hook Norton Lion, Moorehouse blond witch and Purity Mad Goose and UBU. I have tried most of them and have been vastly underwhelmed on each occasion, it seems the ales are not left to condition long enough and are served at a far too cold temperature. This is a common trait with the pub as it seems to do everything it can to annoy its customers. I specifically remember one man shouting at bar staff one Saturday evening because he was told that food had stopped being served, IT WAS 7:45 ON A SATURDAY. The staff are very unprofessional and uninterested in their jobs and this shows through the shabby service, on more than one occasion I have asked for my drink to be topped up not only for overly large head but for shockingly short of the brim measures, only to be greeted with tuts and sarcastic responses. The bar itself tries to incorporate a modern/trendy feel with stripped wooden chairs and assorted retro furniture, trying to give it a more modern feel but I personally find it a bit tacky especially with the fake grass around the seating area. This in part provides some explanation why they feel the can justify high prices for draught and bottled products. lagers include Fosters (£3.30) (Amstell £3.40) Moretti (£3.90) Heiniken (£3.90) as well as John Smiths (£3.00) and Guinness (£3.80) with bottles of brew Dog I.P.A and Newcastle brown coming in at £3.90 and £3.40 respectivley. All in all not a great pick for a good pint but can serve it purpose on sunny days when it has probably the pick of Sherwood's beer gardens, being elevated higher up than other pubs. My advice would be to stay clear on anything other than a roasting hot day, Sherwood and surrounding areas have better beers at more competitive prices in a far less pretentious surroundings.

The Chestnut Tree has now been renamed Fat Cat.
The pub looks like it has a bit of a face lift outside and once inside the seating now looks smart and clean, with a choice of different seating types, the rooms layout is still the same as it was when the Chestnut Tree.
There were three real ales on the bar on my midweek visit,i had a drink of Hook Norton Lion which went down well, the other beers were Castle Rock Harvest Pale and Doom Bar.
The pub was quite busy with mainly student types.
I agree with Alex Conway about the bar staff, there were loads walking about both inside and outside the pub,but there were none behind the bar.
An improvement since my last visit to the Chestnut Tree, but no where near as good as my first few visits to the Chestnut Tree.

The Chestnut Tree is a smart looking pub that is set back from the busy Mansfield road.
When i first visited this pub it had a decent choice of decent real ales on the bar.
Once inside there is one large room with the bar facing, there is a pool table to the right and low wood tables and leather settees near the bar,the left side extends to the rear of the pub and is more of a dining area, but it was empty on my Tuesday afternoon visit, the room is carpeted throughout.
There were three pumps on the bar but only one in use which had Brakspears bitter on,this drink was a bit of a dissapointment being too warm.
There was a decent amount of drinkers in on my Tuesday afternoon visit.
I was quite happy watching music videos which included one of the best ever in my humble opinion,Like a Prayer by Madonna.
This is a comfortable enough pub to have few drinks in but was let down by the beer i was served.

Saturday night in particular can be great fun if a really good band is on. There is a huge age range of people who enjoy the music, the beer and the social scene.
All in all a fun place.
I should add that there is a quiz on Tuesday evenings (free to enter) and there is normally a band on Thursdays as well.
