We arrived here about a minute before opening time (12 noon) but when I had taken all the photos I wanted and the door still wasn't open, it occurred to my drinking companion that the back door might be open...

Once inside, to coin a phrase, we found a very nice village local with the bar against the front wall and sporting five hand pumps. As well as five real ales (see photo) there were real ciders in boxed polypins. My Black Sheep Bitter was in good condition and we thought that Alan would have been pleased to know that his former regular haunt was no longer limited to just Greene King beers. (The Winston Churchill memorial in the gents toilet was a surprise.)

The white lion is a small friendly Former Hardy and Hansons pub now owned by Greene King. This pub gets very busy and has a healthy following from locals, I was very lucky to eventually get a seat on my Tuesday night visit so it is advised to get there early. Once inside the pub has a very village feel to it with low beams and rustic furniture. There are two bars both selling the same products with five hand pulls on each. On my first visit the regular beers Greene King Abbot and Their own White Lion Bitter brewed especially for them by Greene King (£3.00) were supported by three guests, Lincoln Greene Tuck Porter (£3.30), Nottingham EPA and Bentwood galaxy. My second visit saw Black Sheep's special ale and Osset Silver king replacing the Tuck and EPA. My pints of the house bitter and Tuck Porter went down very well, both being immaculately kept but the Black Sheep on my second visit was too new and should not have been served, the landlord was not too happy to be told this news and was rather defensive until backed up by another patron. Overall the White Lion although now under the management of Greene King has maintained its charm and beer quality from the hardy and Hanson days and is well deserving of a visit if passing.

*on a side note they offer keg Hardy and Hansoms Dark and smooth with the dark (a 3.1% mild) being sold at £3.10 a pint, this seems very expensive under the circumstances and drinkers should be weary.

I have been drinking in the White Lion (Top House) on and off for the past 30 odd years. It was always a regular Thursday night haunt after Venture Scouts, we used to pack the top bar to the rafters, so much so that you had to have your pint passed overhead. The pub became a second home, some weeks, it was a 7 night run up till I got married and bought a house. The pub went down hill a bit with a couple of changes of management in the late 90's and we all sort of drifted away from it, just popping back now an again when passing. GK inherited the place when they bought out Hardey Hanson and to thier credit have not ripped it out, opting to add little improvements. My brother in law and I dropped in last Thursday for a few, just for old times sake, having not visited for over 2 years. We were really happy with what we found. A good selection of brews on the bar, including Kimberly Best, Abbot, Trip, GK IPA and a guest from Moonstone?? I think. All of the beers were perfect, a function of the superb cellars in the pub, which I know to be carved from solid sandstone, having been down there a few times. The conditions are perfect for beer storage. We really should make an effort to go back up the Top House, despite the GK ownership, the pub is still great and the beer is in first rate condition.

Popped in last night for a couple, place was packed :O) Beer was excellent. had a pint of Nottingham EPA, Landlords Choice and Moonshine. Noticed poster for 10 beer festival on the 23rd May 2013. 10 beers from within 10 miles of the pub, including Blue Monkey, Nottingham and Full Mash.
