ORIGINAL REVIEW June 2015

A fine building on a main road and close to the Statford on Avon Canal, this is a very fine gastro pub with cooking skills to match any serious restaurant. It's all very classy inside, pew benches running below the front windows with satin covered cushions dotted about and tea lights lit for the evening session, and this is just the area infront of the bar for drinking! Sensibly both this area and the higher level lounge can be used for supping while to the right is a dedicated restaurant looking very sophisticated and the friendly bar staff do enquire politely if you are dining without placing pressure.
The decor matches the upmarket vibe with some fine mirrors below the wooden arched interior, comfy chairs in the lounge and flag stoned floor by the bar.Light jazz was playing on the sound system .At the bar three handpumps were dispensing Sharps Doom Bar and Atlantic with Purity Pure Gold and the condition of the latter two was good.Shame that a pub with such good food should be so unadventurous on the real ale front with all available beers at modest ABV's .However no complaints about the food quality which seemed to justify the premium pricing with most starters circa £7 and mains £14 to £20.An early bird offer of 2 course for £15 seems a good deal.
It's a mile away from an earthy country boozer ,but the presence of real ale,a very friendly welcome and decent food made this an enjoyable evening, pleased that I got smartened up before crossing the threshold !

UPDATE
Now part of the Brunning & Price stable,it hasn't really changed although the higher level lounge off the car park is now a relaxed dining area, while the table service restaurant is the most interesting part of the pub with a lower ,exposed timber ceiling, small leaded windows and lots of character.Regular ales will be Timothy Taylor Boltmaker (NBSS 4) and B&P Original (NBSS 2.5,brewed by St Austell) with a guest on my visit Hook Norton Golden Hooky (Why ?,wasted opportunity). There are keg option is you want more than low ABV beers (a decent Church House IPA on my visit) but as before the food is better than the beer offering despite decent Boltmakers.

Well described by BF below but I must admit not really my cup of tea. Despite that it's perfectly welcoming spot for drinkers, and pleasantly cosy if you can nab a spot by the fire. Very nice UBU and cheap too if you happen across the early evening happy hour. I'm sure the food is very nice if you like that sort of thing, there's seldom much on the menu in this sort of place that I like to eat.
