Not my first visit but the first time I have used a Spoons hotel, and very good it was too for the price. Interior remains as described below. GBG quality over the three beers I had over two visits during Jimbo’s stag weekend, so someone is doing a decent job in the cellar. Due to its compact nature it isn’t the most restful Spoons experience as it’s almost always crowded, especially so since the demise of the other Spoons in town, the Postal Order. But for a bit of cheap grub and a decent pint, it’s well-worth putting on the list.

April 2014
Formerly a Lloyds No.1 but now seemingly a usual JDW during my late morning visit. Claims C16th heritage as a converted hotel and the long, rambling interior backs it up a little. There are two carpeted seating 'ends' which are both quite bright and airy (the rear has exposed brickwork walls, the front has large gaudy high-backed banquettes). Upstairs room light and bright but closed. Some pleasant canopied outside seating down the passageway entrance. Six pumps so not a vast selection but they all looked operational; my US collaboration ale (Sir Ruan) was a little cold but otherwise in excellent shape. Usual Spoons clientèle with a noticeable slant towards mums and pushchairs. Quite impressed with this one and I preferred it to the Postal Order as a venue. Rated 7

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Crown (JD Wetherspoon)

Impressive façade, with the main part of the 'spoons to be found on the right-hand side of the Crown Passage and the hotel entrance opposite the main doors. Large, elongated main bar, with another smaller one upstairs (not visited). Relatively light decor. Also has a few outdoor tables at the back. Thankfully the number of handpumps has doubled since my previous visit in 2014, and with 11 of 12 in operation, the choice of real ale was much better too so rating increased accordingly.
