Oh dear. Dreadful. A small pub that stretches back. The rear part is up a few steps and has a tree branch feature. Seems to be be home to the disillusioned, dribbling care in the community rejects most towns have. 4 handpulls for Doom Bore and Black Sheep. Full on authentic native babbling going on at the bar.

Named after a Wakefield wine merchant of some renown, the pub itself is housed in a grade II listed, eighteenth century building of two and a half storeys. The interior is open plan and split level and appears to have been four separate rooms at some stage. Decor is quite plain with white walls dominating, although bizarrely featuring split logs in some areas, like a low-rent hunting lodge. To the rear, up the stairs, there’s a pool table and a dartboard.

At the bar there were the usual T-bar suspects, plus, four cask ales: Abbott, Landlord, Doombar and a collaboration between Southwark Brewery and Greene King - ‘Thames Dock Pale’, which is what I plumped for. ( The curiosity of trying something from Southwark overcoming the hesitancy of trying something from Greene King) A pale, hop forward beer, it would have been very refreshing, if it hadn’t been rather tired. Service from the young barmaid was notably cool and erratic. Leaving the pint to settle, she wandered off and never came back! A colleague eventually topped it up for her.

Atmosphere wise, it was very busy and noisy when I called late Friday afternoon. People had obviously got a good start on seeing in the weekend. Unfortunately, the six screens showing sport accompanied by music at high volume meant there was too much sensual bombardment for my delicate constitution. Furthermore, a party of women on the adjacent table were talking very loudly to be heard over the music, whilst constantly effin’ and jeffin’ to Olympic standard. I suspect three of them had just wandered over from the podium. On polishing off my pint, I decided this wasn’t really my sort of place. It’s possible I might take a punt on the guest ale, in the future, at a quieter time, but, realistically, I don’t think I’ll be darkening its doors again.

It's a great pub to go in. The service is great and the beer fantastic. Resident DJ Trist plays great music. On Mondays nights it's a £1 a pint night from 8 til late. What more could you want! I highly recommend it. I can't keep out of the place. Best pub in Wakefield.
