It's been reported that Saturday 18th February will be its last day as a Spoons.
Review as a Spoons June 2016
This is a Spoons set in a grand old building that sadly is earmarked for closure as it appears on the third list from May 2016. It's been well described below and I didn't venture upstairs. The main bar downstairs seems to have almost entirely high tables and chairs as does the smaller bar area further back. I counted six hand pumps in the main bar which had the JDW footbore International beer, Cumberland Corby Amber, Cameron's Fridge Magnet, Doom Bore, Abbot and Mordue Radgie Gadgie. The rear bar's four hand pumps had Ruddles, a cider, the pathetic Marston's One Is 90 and Elgood's Greyhound. I went for the Cumberland beer (£2.39) which was in good nick and sat in the dining room.
This is a great building but I found the lack of low tables and chairs on the ground floor a bit of a pain. Despite that it's a travesty that this place should go when they've got a really rubbish one in the city namely the Keel Row.

An amazing JDW conversion from the old Union Club - the pictures do it better justice than my words but I'll have a go. Enter to a sumptuous lobby area with a grand staircase facing. On the lower floor are two bars over a myriad of characterful rooms, whilst upstairs hosts three more sumptuous rooms and another bar. The upstairs bar room affords a good view towards the Royal Station Hotel. Loads of ales on, and seemingly different across all the bars. My Tyneside Blonde was in very good shape for early morning. A Wetherspoons for people who don't usually like the chain.

One of the better Wetherspoon' that seemed to have bars all over the place. A good selection of well kept real ales.
