This is a great pub, one of my favourites. It’s got everything a proper pub should have – great beer, friendly staff, cosy atmosphere, decent but not pretentious pub grub, a beer garden; there’s nothing not to like.

It’s split in to several different sections, although they all lead in to one another. The main bar area at the front is a cosy affair with candles on the tables, beams on the ceiling adorned with plenty of old jugs, a fireplace or two and loads of pictures on the wall, many black and white photos of Congresbury from years gone by and various farming implements, brasses and even an old cart wheel. The walls are a mixture of exposed stonework and plaster. This leads back to the main bar area which has quite a small serving area so can get busy at times. Off to the left is a small snug, and further on to the rear an open room with plenty of light wood panelling.

There’s a decent menu and a small selection of specials. This is good honest food at reasonable prices. Not your real basic pub grub, but certainly nothing fancy either. Faggots (Mrs. B’s favourite), Fish Pie, Fish & Chips, a pasta dish, etc. I had a game pie from the specials board that contained rabbit, duck, venison and pheasant and it was a warming, generous dish and good value at £9.95, although most of the mains are more around the £8 mark. The landlord Gary and his wife, along with the rest of the staff are all very friendly and welcoming.

Beers on this occasion were St. Austell’s Tribute, London Pride, RCH East Street Cream, Doom Bar and Palmer's Dorset Gold, all dispensed form barrels racked up behind the bar. There was also Butcombe on tap. Ciders were Bath Ales' Somerset Press and Thatcher’s Heritage.

All in all, a great pub. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
