This place dates from 1869, but for some reason it was rebuilt in this rather commanding style just 11 years later.
Sadly, this is now a backpackers’ pub, with the previous review still applicable. It’s really just a stripped-out place with, as mentioned, scruffy yoofs lounging about watching football on the TV, ugly Six Nations tat as décor.
I didn’t linger and wouldn’t return; the Royal Oak is across the road.

There's no real ale - a half of Guinness was £2. Food seems to be pizze - medium size is £6, amd large £8.

This is a scruffy hostel bar in what must once have been a traditional pub. Barrels are combined with tall stools; there are sofas ranged along by the windows with low tables and small stools, and a single normal table with standard chairs. There was a large pull down screen on which some football highlights were being projected.

Clientele comprised young people loafing about on the sofas eating out of paper bags. This is really a bar with nothing to recommend it other than it was open and somewhere to escape from the rain as I was passing. But the youngsters seemed to appreciate it, and good luck to them I say.

A large corner pub, there is no real ale here anymore, I had half a BrewDog Punk IPA at £2.40.
Bare wood floor, some wood panelling on the walls, leather sofas and bar stools, a pool table,Loud dance music, live football and a cheap pizza menu. It's not a place I would choose to return to.
