Huge, sprawling pub that caters for everyone. Food, real ale, music and the only place showing the football.

Loved it. Would come back.

For an out-of-the-way country pub, the Hardknott Bar serves an astonishing range of real ales. At the time of my visit, there were four from four different Lake District breweries, plus two from further afield (see photos). None of them could be described as mainstream, but neither are they so far out as to be undrinkable. The bar counter is on two levels, with six hand pumps for beers on the upper level, in the main room, and the lower bar being dedicated to real cider. There's an annual beer festival, with 140 beers split between here and the two pubs in Boot village. See http://www.bootbeer.co.uk/ (next festival 8th to 11th June 2017).

The main bar was undergoing extensive renovations when I was here, but I was told they hoped to be completed by Easter. This is a long rambling farmhouse hotel, with the bars in the adjoining cottage and in the newer extension which was built to link the two. The décor is all white walls and dark beams, very clean-cut, with framed pictures and old bills to add some interest. A grandfather clock stood by the closed door to the building site part of the pub.

On the bar were four hand pumps serving two from Roosters of Knaresborough, one from Jennings and a Hardknott house beer called Woolpacker. (Hardknott used to be based here but the beers are now brewed in Millom using water taken from the pub's own spring.) The Woolpacker was only £2.60 a pint, similar to the nearby pubs in Boot village, and vastly different to other parts of the Lake District where £3.20 plus is already normal.
