A long established Wetherspoon’s located in a former retail shop, it’s not quite as large as many of the company’s outlets, but is nonetheless still a good sized pub. Whilst there was a decent crowd in on our Thursday night visit, it didn’t seem as popular as many of their pubs, especially on “curry club” night and was certainly nowhere near full to capacity. Large windows across the front of the pub make the most of the outlook, such as it is.

Internally it consists of one large open plan room, although this is divided in to a few separate areas by the use of wooden balustrade and partitioning, some of which included stained glass. Much of the pub has full height wood panelling on the walls, and this gives it an almost elegant feel in places, which is certainly not something that can be said about many of the pubs in Bedminster. Elsewhere there was stripy wallpaper, whilst the floors were predominantly carpet with tiling in the high traffic areas. More wood panelling was inset in to the ceiling in many areas, and one section had a number of heraldic shields surrounding it. A sectioned off area at the rear had a number of large bookcases set in to the walls, giving it something of a country house library feel. A few old black and white pictures of the Bristol area were on the walls, including one of the old ferry crossing on the nearby river and there was also a community noticeboard at the rear.

Beers on tap were Doom Bar, Abbott Ale, Bass, Ruddles Best, GWB Whakapapa, Quantock WPA and Cotleigh Chocca Mocca. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Gold, Strongbow Dark Fruit, Thatcher’s Haze, Blackthorn and Magners.

Apparently Robert Fitzharding was a local big shot in Norman Times. A bit before my time I'm afraid. The Spoons named after him is old school with the old plastic dark blue and gold signage looking rather faded.
It's old school inside as well but in a better way with a smallish L shaped room and a small patio at the rear on the left. On a hot day it was a relief to sit in here with the aircon at full blast and away from open doors. Although there are two sets of six hand pumps all the beers were doubled. They consisted of the JDW Trio Of Doom, Bass (unusually), Plain Ales India Plain Ale and GWB Apricot Blonde. I was drawn to the boxes in the fridge so went for the Orchard Pig Hogfather (£2.39) and the Black Dragon (£2.75). I also ate here and everything was fine. One of the barmaids had a ring through her nose but that didn't trouble me as my star sign is Taurus.
I found this to be a decent Spoons.

Very much a 'spoons-by-numbers in what is presumably a shop conversion, with a 'L'-shaped layout and all the usual furniture and decor. Also had a rather uninspired choice of eight real ales from the two banks of six handpumps, of which the Golden Rule from Bespoke Brewing (£2.35) seemed the most interesting (although it turned out to be difficult to pour and a bit hazy).
