Having passed this pub - built 1967 - dozens of times over the years, I thought I'd pop in despite its seemingly rather unpleasant appearance. Believe me, appearances aren't deceptive. This really is a dreadful pub, the kind of thing I'd imagine attached to a nondescript hotel at Heathrow; this is the sort of place Alan Partridge would take a woman on a date. The pub seems to be dominated by TVs; the lavatories were scruffy and the lock to the cubicle was missing.

The only ales on offer were Marston's EPA and Pedigree which weighed in at a staggering £4.30 a pint! This is the most I've ever paid for a pint of ale in a pub. Yes, St. John's Wood may be one of London's most expensive areas but there are other areas that are more expensive and they don't charge this much. Yes, there are those who will point out that this is the only pub in the area, but my argument is simply this: don't end up in this area. A short walk north-east up to the roundabout provides you with the 274 bus to Primrose Hill. Alternatively, walk south-west to Little Venice and sample the pubs there. I for one will never return to this place.

I was a bit disconcerted to see that both handpumps facing you as you enter had clips reversed, but I spotted another couple along the bar and these were clipped for Marston's Pedigree and some sort of pumpkin beer from Wychwood. The Pedigree was £4.30 a pint, which I reckon is a bit over the top even for St John's Wood. There was pretty standard sort of menu available - the fish finger sandwich is £12.50, as is the fish and chips. All a bit overpriced I reckon.

An area on the left was set for diners, but looking at a menu at one of the drinkers' tables a young lady came over to ask me if I was ready to order. I fancied a sarny, but not at these prices. It has a decked and covered area at the front just behind the pavement. This is an ordinary and characterless modern build pub, forming part of Lord's cricket ground and owned by the MCC. Furnishings are cheap looking but functional. There were TVs on, at least one of which was showing some cricket of course.

Although this a fairly charmless pub, I guess it's handy for those desperate for a pint and getting a pass out from the cricket. Indeed, it's considerably better than a number of football ground bars I've visited in the past.
