2 floor Lloyds spoons with the basement area larger than the ground floor.

The Milan Bar is a large Lloyds No 1 with a street level bar that supports six hand pumps and a downstairs bar with another three. Both obviously have a selection of standard draught and cheap food and drink deals are available.

For a Wednesday afternoon this place was very busy, which was down to the cheap beer rather than the ambience. There was no music and some plasma screens were showing muted rolling news.

There is a small group of tables outside for smokers and the entrance leads to a modest ground floor lounge area but with a very large staircase down to the basement bar.The ground floor extends alongside an arcade with a full length frosted glass partition running down one wall while opposite at the rear is a bar sporting six handpumps. The decor and furniture is classic 'spoons ,so nothing to get excited about. The ale choice on my trip was GK IPA,Abbott and Doom Bar as regulars with guest in the shape of Burton Bridge Golden Delicious,West Berkshire Good Old Boy (which on ordering I was told was unavailable but the pump clip stayed on display, bad practice) and Sixpoint Importer ,in good condition but a dull malty brew.
The basement bar is much larger and to one corner is a mixing desk with large wall mounted speakers,so the basement is the Lloyds No 1 part of the operation. The high ceiling and industrial heating vents make this windowless room particularly bleak and the serving bar here only has three handpumps for the regular beers,so buy guests upstairs.
The pub was calm on a Saturday afternoon but no doubt the atmosphere changes as the evening wears on ,so my rating reflects the time of my visit. It wasn't as bad as I expected ,but nearby The George is a far better bet for the real ale fan.
