Requested be closed with reason - Other: Seems to have been closed for quite some time, to judge by the weeds. There's a notice on the window regarding a recent planning application for change of use to a hotel with private bar, which would make it no longer a pub.

Another gastro pub - how many does one village need?

More space to sit than at the racehorses and the chance to try Dark Horse - previously unseen.

We popped in to check out the food offering, as I had remembered that the vegetarian choices were pretty good on my previous visit. The internal decor is now gastro-pub grey and the food is expensive and what I would class as poncy, not the filling grub I need after a day's cycling.

There are still a couple of hand pumps on the bar, and I came back later after eating at the Blue Bell to try out the local Dark Horse Hetton Pale - a beer that is described elsewhere in these terms: "Lemon barley and slate aroma. Flavour has almond, mineral grassiness and a big hop punch." To be honest it didn't do much for me; I may have missed the slate aroma. To be fair, the beer was no more expensive than in the other pubs in the village and there's still a pub here, struggling to break free from its gastro chains.

I was amazed how quiet it was here on a recent Friday night. The weather may have had something to do with this, as it had been raining all day and some roads were impassable due to floods. One hotel guest had adapted the magnificent inglenook fireplace as an impromptu drying room, his socks getting the benefit of the roaring log fire.

On the bar were six hand pumps, five of which were available, serving Black Sheep, Tetleys, Thwaites Original and Lancaster Bomber, and the local Buttertubs. I had the latter to start with, but found it too bitter to want a second, so switched to the Thwaites bitter, an old favourite. Beers were in good condition, but perhaps poured with too tight a sparkler. We had some food too, which was very tasty and good value (£8.95 for our vegetarian options, other dishes were a little more expensive but not excessively so).

This is a comfortable room, with wooden bench seating around the walls and a stone flagged floor. On one of the low beams is a series of cartoons which I take to be of locals, since they were not identifiable as anyone famous. Later the place filled up with a bunch of 50-somethings who, like us, were staying at the youth hostel just around the corner - if it hadn't been for us, the place would have remained empty all night.
