The right hand bar of the Railway houses seating and a stage area in the front right corner, where there is also a piano. This is a regular live music venue, although during my recent early Tuesday evening visit the music was coming from a radio station. On the right hand wall is a dartboard and at the rear is another seating area with a pool table and another dartboard. The left hand lounge bar has more seating and a burner in a slate bottomed exposed brick fireplace.
This is a Holts pub so the lone ale option was their Bitter, four hand pumps across the two bars were unused. A standard keg range was also available alongside San Miguel. I think my lasting memory of this pub will be the extremely friendly woman behind the jump, who I assumed was the landlady.

Another fairly traditional looking pub with separate rooms. We entered at the right hand bar, which was the busiest, and there was some live music act on on Saturday night. It was also quite loud and didn't seem to be anywhere left to sit, so like miserable old gits we made our purchase and sloped off to the much quieter room to the left of the bar.

There are separate hand pumps on each side of the bar, Holts Bitter featured along with Stone Faced by Lymestone Brewery. The Stone Faced was a rather traditional bitter and didn't stand out as anything special, though was perfectly acceptable. There appeared to be an IPA available on the other side of the bar, but this pump clip got removed in a seemingly random act by the chap behind the bar.

One to try if you are doing a crawl down this stretch but don't be expecting great things on the real ale front. On the upside the Stone Faced was only £2.60 for a pint (or in our case, two halves)!

Another well regarded pub on this stretch of road through Heaton Norris, this is a fairly smart three room boozer with a more restrained ale selection than some of its neighbours. To the right is a decent sized bare boarded bar with a short servery to the left and some decent looking banquette seating around the perimeter, supplemented by standard chairs and low stools. An upright piano was squeezed into one corner although whether it ever gets any use was unclear. A large screen on one wall was showing some sort of live sports coverage but my attention was distracted by a young child who was sat nearby wearing a hat in the shape of a roast turkey. The left hand bar seemed a little more peaceful and had a wonderful feature fireplace over on the left hand wall. The seating set-up in here was similar to the other room and despite the pub clearly having modernised a lot of the furniture and decor over the years, all the banquettes retain their bell pushes. From here you can access a games room to the rear with a pool table and dartboard and I’m told there is a function room upstairs as well.
There were four beers on when we visited on a Friday night, but only one of these – Holt’s Bitter – was on in the right hand bar, so you might want to check both rooms before ordering. Other options included Borough IPA and beers from Milk Street and Calvors. Unsure of the full range, I went for the IPA, which wasn’t in the best shape and was quite comfortably the worst beer I had from nineteen different pubs around town.
It seems that quality standards might be dropping in this place, which is a shame when nearby pubs are able to support twice as many handpulls with no detriment to the ale. I found the pub nicely presented and quite comfortable but there are plenty of better options nearby, making this one only really worth a punt as part of a crawl.
