Recently re-opened having been shut for a couple of years, this has undergone an extensive refurbishment and is now run by the same team behind the popular Venga tapas bar in Portishead. Although not a tapas bar, there are many similarities between the two venues, not least the extensive outdoor seating area and garden bar counter. From a quick look around the garden there appears to be plenty of decking, covered seating areas and even a “tent-pi” (a cross between a tent and a tipi?) although unfortunately this was closed due to an arson attack on Friday evening, just a couple of days after they had opened. The mentality of some people really does beggar belief.

As for the pub itself, the etched glass door with a white hart motif gives you some idea of what the décor is going to be like and they’ve clearly gone for an upmarket and very contemporary look, not at all like the traditional country inn that it was before. It’s a good size, U-shape pub wrapped around a central bar counter with a further dog leg off to one side. Flooring is some type of wood effect laminate whilst the paintwork is largely very pale shades of cream, grey and green although there are also some striking feature walls such as one in a very vivid orange. Large open lamp shades hang from the ceiling and there are a few colourful drawings on the walls. In contrast perhaps to the modern décor elsewhere, an old chimney breast has been left as exposed stonework although instead of a fire in the hearth there was just a brightly illuminated wicker reindeer.

We didn’t study the menu, but food is clearly a major focus here and besides the Sunday roasts we noticed a pizza menu on the bar and a specials “board” offering a langoustine carbanarra for £11. I use the tem board loosely, since it was actually written on a large roll of paper. Presumably when changing the specials, the old one is torn off and something else added in it’s place.

Beers on tap were Theakstons Best, Theakstons HB and Deuchars IPA, all of which had sold out due to a hectic opening weekend. I did hear the barmaid offering someone a Doom Bar, although I couldn’t see any sign of this so perhaps it was a bottled one. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Dry and Thatcher’s Gold. I had been looking forward to trying this again after it’s prolonged closure, but ultimately I left feeling rather disappointed. It’s really lost any “pubbiness” now and feels more like a restaurant in many ways, not helped by the fact that the place was full of families dining, all of which seemed to have a baby or young toddler in tow. One old boy perched on the end of our table, but he soon necked his pint and left. We did pretty much the same ourselves. I may possibly pop back at some point to try the food, but I can’t see myself bothering to stop for a pint.

Quinno _ left this review about The White Hart Inn

Roadside pub on the Portishead-Clevedon road. A swift visit, three ales on, Doom Bar, Butcombe and Exmoor Gold. My Butcombe was in good nick, though I thought the Doom was poor. Cheddar Valley available as the proper cider. The interior is split into separate rooms, with dining to the right hand side. The bar on the left looked to have had a recent refurb and was tidy, if a little bland. Quiz was advertised for the Wednesday evening. The beer garden to the rear has good views over Swiss Valley towards the 60’s engineering feat of the M5, which makes for a rather pleasant sight on a golden sunset evening as the concrete catches the light quite spectacularly. I’d give this another go.
