A traditional country pub tucked away down a lane in this pleasant village, it has one of the best beer garden views that I’ve been to with a great vista overlooking Blagdon lake and the surrounding hills. It’s one that I’ve been coming to for more years than I care to remember, and whilst the interior is still very pleasant, it is perhaps looking slightly tired in places these days and could do with a little TLC.

Internally it consists of one large room with a smaller room off to one side. The larger room is split in to two with a couple of steps separating them and an altogether much cosier feel to the lower half. There were plenty of wooden beams on the low ceiling, red patterned carpet on the floor, a few horse brasses and a massive stone fireplace with a real log fire blazing away which was a nice touch on a cold evening. A few other bits and pieces were scattered around such as a various copper pans, an outboard motor from a boat and even a stiffed fish mounted in a glass display case. A few generic pictures were on the walls and the seating was mostly conventional tables and chairs with the odd church pew or two.

The menu offered a good selection of “pub grub” dishes such as fish & chips, ham egg & chips, kedgeree, sausage and mash, pork belly and so on. Prices were perhaps a step or two up from your normal pub prices, with most of the main courses coming in at somewhere around the £12 mark. We went for the ham hock and pea pie with mash and this was a pretty decent dish, a generous portion and very tasty. Across the table though, the beer battered fish & chips was something of a disappointment, being a very small portion of fish that was gone in a few mouthfuls. For £12.95 it was far too expensive.

Beers on tap were all from the Wadworth’s stable with their IPA, 6X and Swordfish. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Dry and Thatcher’s Haze. Overall I do quite like this pub with it’s cosy ambience, great location and friendly staff, but I think next time perhaps I’ll just stick to having a beer in the garden and admiring the views rather than going for the food.
