Blackthorn _ left this review about The Assembly

A good sized pub in the heart of East Street’s pedestrianized shopping area, it has a somewhat mass produced, corporate feel to it, something akin to a cross between a Wetherspoons and Premier Inn, for example. A stripy carpet covers the front half of the pub with some parquet style laminate beyond this. Paintwork is predominantly pale brown with deep salmon and burgundy elsewhere and there is some wood panelling in places as well as some pine cladding on the pillars. A number of TV screens were showing a football match, and a BT Sports fixture list was on display.

The menu looked to be a mass produced affair and was divided in to sections such as main meals, burgers, wraps, sandwiches, etc. Main meals included such pub grub staples as scampi and chips, ham egg and chips, quiche, chicken jalfrezi, etc. Most of these were priced around the £6 mark, although many were also available as part of a “2 for £7” deal. Various offers were on different nights including curry club, fish Friday, and, more unusually, a kebab festival which perhaps says something about the pub’s target clientele.

Beers on tap were Courage Best, Bombardier and Well’s Try Time which is presumably a special brewed for the world cup. A fourth pump for Doom Bar appeared to have run out. Ciders were well represented with Thatcher’s Gold, Blackthorn, Symonds Founders Reserve and Carling.
