Unexpectedly small bar with an upstairs area. Full-on COVID regs like the place doesn’t want to move on from 2020, made worse by the lack of a manual sign-in option; the barman hadn't come across a phone that is more than 3 years old and doesn't do magic QR code scans just by waving the camera about…with no paper he had to grumpily sign me in himself via his own phone. I got my revenge by choosing to sit at the bar and remove my mask, just to prove to myself the whole thing is lunacy – why have stools at the bar when you’re demanding masks for even entering the damned place?? Inevitably after the sign-in rigmarole payment was card-only and it's fair to say relations were becoming rather strained when I proffered actual cash like I was some sort of backward bumpkin. Anyway, the interior is quite neat and modern (though the faint whiff of damp undoes that a bit). Bizarre world music on the speakers, I expected to see Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel on another table. Six pumps with all of them on the go; the range was very samey with only one not some sort pale/IPA. I went for the Crossborders Session which was a decent drop if a little flat to fully excel (NBSS 3). Maybe once Wu-flu hysteria dies down I might appreciate this one more.

Blackthorn _ left this review about Monty's

An attractive and traditional looking pub just a short stroll from Haymarket station, it’s quite small internally with only a limited amount of seating and not a great deal of standing space either. Windows take up most of the exterior frontage, and these are arched at the top with etched glass at the bottom.

Décor wise it’s quite traditional, with a wood strip floor in the bulk of the pub and some Victorian style chequered tiling around the bar area. A lower section of ceiling at the rear was covered in an old black and white map of the locale, while the front ceiling was much higher with some ornate cornice work around the perimeter. A TV screen was stuck up above the porch in the corner, but unusually listed the current drinks selection rather than a TV channel. Seating was limited as mentioned, with a couple of fitted benches at the rear but the majority of the rest of the pub being laid out for vertical drinking with ledges along the side and front, and a large beer barrel to rest your pint on. A number of shelves covering the whole wall behind the bar counter was something of a feature and containing an extensive range of spirits, and a ladder was alongside in order to reach the higher shelves.

Beers on tap were Two by Two’s New England Pale, Anarchy Smash, Orkney IPA, St Austell Trevail, Wakatu and Vocation Low & Behold. There were also a few keg options dispensed from taps on the back wall and listed on a chalkboard next to the bar. After that lot, the cider choice was distinctly disappointing with…..nothing at all, or at least, not on tap. A real shame, as I thought this was otherwise a cracking little pub.

Colin Walker left this review about Monty's

This former bar called Ossian’s, then Carters and now called Monty’s sits about 5 minutes from Haymarket Station. The main front door gives access to the door on the left which leads to the bar and almost straight on is down stairs to the toilets and to the right to a small beer garden. The bar area gives access to further seating to a slightly cosy / cramped upstairs area. So, if using the bar and upstairs you will feel like you are going back outside to use the toilets. There is a good choice of pumps available with Cross Borders Brewing Company World Beers, Fine Ales Jarl, Dark Revolution - Velveteen a dark chocolate stout, Dark Revolution So.La - a west coast ale, The Mobberley Brew House Maori – a New Zealand pale ale, Ilkley Brewery – Mary Jane, all on tap. So, when having too much to drink and you slump on the floor you can always study the map of Edinburgh on the ceiling.
